Para La Naturaleza (PLN) is a non-profit organization that protects and manages natural areas in Puerto Rico (PR). Part of PLN’s mission is to integrate society in the conservation of PR’s natural resources and ecosystems. Hacienda La Esperanza Reserve is one of them, the biggest of its type in the northwest of PR. La Esperanza used to be a sugar plantation in the 19th century. Besides its historical value, it also carries high ecological value. After PLN acquired the area, it was turned into a natural and historic reserve. Focusing on PLN’s mission, we designed and developed a wayfinding system that incorporates various elements, such as historical and architectural facts from the now restored site. This system is meant to complement the experience of taking a tour with PLN interpreters but can also aid self-guided visits.
